geohabnet R package for analyzing habitat connectivity

geohabnet provides a quick, open-source, reproducible, and generalizable approach to evaluating potential scenarios for the spread of a species through habitat landscapes. By mapping habitat connectivity, geohabnet can support biosecurity and conservation programs, including the design of surveillance strategies for transboundary pathogens, biological invasions, and endangered species.

Preparing for using geohabnet - especially for geohabnet workshops

🛠️ WORKSHOP PREPARATION GUIDE (and feedback link)

Mapping Habitat Connectivity with geohabnet

Please complete these three setup steps on your laptop at the beginning of the workshop.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1️⃣ Update R Environment

Having a current version of R prevents package compatibility errors during our practical exercises. This is especially important if your version is earlier than 4.5.1.

  • Action: Download and install the latest stable release for Windows, Mac, or Linux directly from the Official CRAN Website at cran.r-project.org

2️⃣ Download Workshop Data Files

We will analyze the same data models illustrated by Plex Sulá et al. (2026) during the live session.

3️⃣ Install the geohabnet Package

The geohabnet package handles geographic risk analysis and biological network computations.

  • Action: Open RStudio or R. Open the “0SM2_install_geohabnet” file that you downloaded from Figshare and execute the standard installation script in your console as recommended in that file. Please also install all dependencies needed.

💡 Troubleshooting Support: Feel free to ask for help from organizers during the workshop if you experience any package installation errors.
